In a generous gesture of corporate social responsibility, Haycarb PLC, a leading global manufacturer of activated carbon, has donated laptops to 15 deserving undergraduates at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. This initiative for the second consecutive year aims to support and enhance the educational experience of these students, equipping them with the necessary tools to excel in their academic pursuits.
The donation event named “ Sisu Divi Pahana”, which took place on 24th of August 2024, marks a significant milestone in Haycarb PLC’s ongoing commitment to fostering educational advancement and community support. The laptops have been distributed to the students during a special ceremony attended by university officials, directors and representatives from Haycarb PLC at the Hayleys head office.
In this program the Haycarb PLC donated 101 laptops among students in seven state universities around the country. The laptops, which are equipped with the latest technology, will provide the students with enhanced access to digital resources, facilitate their research and assignments, and help bridge the digital divide that many face in today’s rapidly evolving academic environment.
Mr Rajitha Kariyawasan, Managing Director of Haycarb PLC, expressed his enthusiasm about the initiative, stating, “At Haycarb PLC, we believe in the power of education as a catalyst for positive change. By providing these laptops, we hope to empower these talented undergraduates to achieve their academic goals and prepare for their future careers. We are proud to support the university students in its mission to develop the next generation of leaders and innovators.”. He also mentioned the leadership given by Mr. Mohan Pandithage, Chairman and Chief Executive of Hayleys Group who missed the event due to unavoidable business visit to a forging country.
Dr. Mahesh Fernando, Director of Student welfare, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, expressed gratitude for the support, stating, “We are deeply appreciative of Haycarb PLC’s generous contribution. This donation not only provides our students with essential tools for their studies but also sends a strong message of encouragement and support from the corporate sector. We believe this will significantly enhance their learning experience and help them achieve their academic aspirations.” The company’s commitment to education and community development continues to shine through such impactful initiatives, reinforcing its role as a responsible and forward-thinking corporate entity.
The selection of the students was based on merit and financial need, ensuring that those who would benefit the most from this support were chosen. The fifteen recipients from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura were selected from the student welfare division of the university under the supervision of Deputy Registrar, Ms. Thushari Malkanthi and Senior Staff Management Assistant, Ms. Ayesha Jayathissa. This donation is part of Haycarb PLC’s broader strategy to give back to the community and contribute to the development of Sri Lanka’s educational sector.
